The Digital Dictionary of Buddhism states:
- After an initial period of deep study of the Vinaya, he focused on the practice of Chan under the tutelage of Zhimen 智門. He resided at Lingyinsi 靈隱寺, Cuifengsi 翠峰寺, and Xuedoushan 雪竇山. Most famous among his extant works are the Mingjue chanshi yulu 明覺禪師語錄, and the Biyanji baize song 碧巖集百則頌. His posthumous title was Mingjue dashi 明覺大師. 〔禪林僧寶傳, 淨慈寺志, 五燈嚴統〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Yokoi][2]
The Princeton Dictionary states:
- During his residence in Zishengsi, Xuedou acquired more than seventy students and composed his famed collection of one hundred old cases (guce, viz., gong'an) known as the Xuedou songgu, which in turn formed the basis of Chan master Yuanwu Keqin’s influential Biyan lu. Xuedou also composed the Tongting yulu, Xuedou kaitang lu, Puquan ji, Zuying ji, and various other texts.[1]
