Xu gaoseng zhuan (J. Zoku kōsōden; K. Sok kosŭng chŏn 續高僧傳). In Chinese, “Supplement to the Biographies of Eminent Monks,” compiled by Daoxuan (596–667).[1] Also known as the Tang gaoseng zhuan.[1]
As the title suggests, the Xu gaoseng zhuan “supplements” or “continues” the work of the earlier Gaoseng zhuan and records the lives of monks who were active in the period between the earlier text written during the Liang dynasty and Daoxuan’s own time.[1]
The Xu gaoseng zhuan contains 485 major and 219 appended biographies.[1]
