Transliteration is the process of representing the text of one language in the writing system of another.
For example, the Wylie transliteration system is a method for transliterating Tibetan script using only the letters available on a typical English language typewriter. In this system:
- ... the Tibetan name ཁྲི་སྲོང་ལྡེ་བཙན
- ... is written as khri srong lde btsan
There are many different systems for transliterating Asian languages into the Latin script (a.k.a. "Roman script", which is used for writing English and other Western languages).
The process of transliterating a non-Latin language (such as Tibetan or Chinese) into the Latin script is referred to as romanization.
