pratiṣedha. (T. dgag pa; C. zhe; J. sha; K. ch’a 遮). In Sanskrit, “negative” or “negation.” Can refer to:

  1. A negative phenomenon. An object which is realized through the explicit elimination of an object of negation. For instance, a non-vase thing.[1]
  2. The refutation of an opponent’s position.[2]

In Buddhist logic, there are two types of negation:[1][2]

  • “affirming negation” (paryudāsa-pratiṣedha), which negates something while implying the existence of something else, and
  • “non-affirming negation” (prasajya-pratiṣedha), which negates without such implication.
