Huiyuan (慧苑) (673–743). A Tang dynasty monk who studied the Huayan zong teachings under Fazang. He was regarded as one of Fazang's chief disciples. He was the author of the Xu huayanjing lüeshu kandingji 續華嚴經略疏刊定記, a commentary on the eighty-fascicle Huayan jing 新譯華嚴經, which was rejected by contemporary Kegon scholars as unorthodox. For this reason Huiyuanʼs name was not included in the list of Kegon patriarchs.[1]

Huiyuan is also the author of the Huayanjing yinyi 華嚴經音義. He was also an eminent lexicographer, compiling the 慧苑音義 dictionary of transliterations and translations from Sanskrit into Chinese.[1]
