guru (T. bla ma; C. shi; J. shi; K. sa 師). The Sanskrit term for a spiritual guide or teacher.[1]

In Early Buddhism (aka Mainstream Buddhism), the relationship between the guru and the disciple is described as like a father and son.[1]

In the Mahayana sutras, the role of the guru takes on increased importance.[1] For example, in the Aṣṭasāhasrikā prajñāpāramitā, the student Sadāprarudita endures many hardships before he is worthy to receive teachings from the bodhisattva Dharmodgata.

In tantra, the role of the guru is of the greatest importance. Devotion to one's guru is a critical aspect of the tantric path.[1] (See also lama.)
