Dazhu Huihai (大珠慧海) (fl. 788) was a Chan master in the Hongzhou School and disciple of Mazu Daoyi. The Dunwu rudao yaomen lun (Treatise on the Essential Doctrine of Suddenly Entering into Enlightenment) is attributed to him. His name, Dazhu, means "Great Pearl."

Dazhu Huihai was born in Jianzhou (Fujian province) during the Tang dynasty.

Huihai is famous for espousing the importance of instantaneous awaking in the context of the so-called 'Southern School of Chan' 南宗禪. Initially he practiced at Dayunsi 大雲寺 before spending six years in Jiangxi studying under Mazu Daoyi (709–788), whose dharma he inherited. He later resided in Yuezhou 越州 (Zhejiang 浙江 province).[1]
