13th century Tibetan thangka painting of Green Tara.

Tārā (T. sgrol ma; C. Duoluo; J. Tara; K. Tara 多羅).[1] A female Mahayana deity associated with protection, compassion and enlightened activity.[2] Tārā is variously presented in Buddhist literature as a great bodhisattva or a fully awakened buddha.[3]

Tārā can appear in many forms, both peaceful and wrathful.[1] Her two main peaceful forms are Green Tārā (Śyāmatārā) and White Tārā (Sitatārā).[1] Green Tārā is associated with enlightened activity, and White Tārā is associated with longevity.[2] Both forms are associated with protection from danger.

Tārā can also appear in wrathful form, for example as Bhṛkutī.

Manifestations of Tārā also include Eight Taras who Protect from Fear and the Twenty-One Taras.
