lotsāwa (lo tsA ba ལོ་ཙཱ་བ་). An honorific term for a "translator" in Tibetan.[1] The term is especially used to refer to the Tibetan translators of the earlier dissemination (snga dar) and later dissemination (phyi dar) of the Buddhist teachings from India to Tibet.[2] These translators generally worked closely with Indian pandits to translate the major Buddhist texts from Sanskrit (or related languages) into Tibetan.[3]
