Guanyin (C. 觀音) is a common Chinese name for Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Guanyin is the most famous bodhisattva in East Asian Buddhism.[1]

The term Guanyin is short for Guanshiyin, which means "[The One Who] Perceives the Sounds of the World". The name Guanyin was popularized by the translator Kumarajiva.[1]
