Abhidharmadīpa ("Lamp of Abhidharma"). An Indian Abhidharma treatise probably composed between 450 and 550 CE.[1] Only fragments of the treatise are extant (sixty-two of 150 folios). These fragments were discovered in Tibet in 1937.[1]

The treatise is composed of two parts:[1]

  • the Abhidharmadīpa, written in verse (kārikā), and
  • the Vibhāṣāprabhāvṛtti, a prose autocommentary.

The author the text is not clear. According to the Princeton Dictionary, the author may have been Vimalamitra (d.u.), an otherwise-unknown disciple of Saṃghabhadra.[1]

The text presents a critique of Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakośa from the point of view of Sarvastivada abhidharma.[1]

Vasubandhu is criticized for the Sautrāntika tendencies betrayed in his doctrinal analyses and also for being a Mahāyānist adherent of the teachings of the “three natures” (trisvabhāva). As such, the Abhidharmadīpa’s author seems to have been a follower of Saṃghabhadra’s *Nyāyānusāra, and the text helps to clarify the positions of Saṃghabhadra and the orthodox Vaibhāṣikas.[1]

The text also presents the views of other thinkers not covered in the Abhidharmakośa.[1]

The text also confirms the identity of Vasubandhu as author of the Abhidharmakośa.[2]
